This small-sized picture is one of the first which Christian LABROUSSE painted after a nine year break. It belongs to his gloomy period, during which he specially favoured dark colours.
This painting give off a tragic atmosphere, conveyed by the use of dull tints (however  enhanced by a few golden flashes), as well as by the expression of the fish itself.

With this painting Christian LABROUSSE breaks off with his previous  manner and pictural technique, adopting a freer representative style and using colour. Sometimes pure colour in deep contrast with the different shades of brown.
The emphasis on the background, which shows off beneath the drawing and gives harmony to the overall picture, is also worth noticing.
As for the way the subject is handled  (in this case a heap of chairs), it typically reflects Christian LABROUSSE'S predilection for deporting numerous objects, either piled or stacked u

This painting, which is supposed to represent a selection of small bottles whose multicoloured contents are enhanced by a bright background lighting, definitely shows Christian LABROUSSE’S taste for pure colour.
His tehcnique, as well as the swiftness and livelyness of his  brushwork, bestow on his whole work an almost « anthropomorphic » life.
